“Cheating at the table.  This is a topic I’m torn about.  On one hand, I can’t help but think it’s time to let the player go.  On the other hand, I think, well, you’re ruining the fun for yourself.  It’s the fails, and tension in those fails that are among the most memorable moments.  These creative approaches are assuming you have already identified that the behavior is actually cheating and not a situation where the player is not familiar with the rules, your house rules, and has not brought some bad habits from another table.”

Let’s talk about storytelling, it’s the foundation of every good DM. You probably listen to and/or watch the variety of DM’s inaction and thought to yourself, wow what a complex and engaging story that they and their players tell together. And it’s true, there are some DMs out there that really tell a fantastic story. There’s no reason why that can’t be you.

Dungeons and Dragons had their origins in wargaming.  It was a supplement to the chain mail rules and not a stand-alone game so it makes sense to include some rules for mass combat.  Back in the day, we had “The Battle System”, a D&D supplement that gave us rules for mass combat.  Today, we have Unearthed Arcana’s version of that system.
